Richard Specht, author of “A Little Rees Specht, Cultivating Kindness,” read to our students and gave signed copies of his book to several children who participated in a contest noting how they sow seeds of kindness in their lives each day. Our children will also all receive Rees Specht "pay-it-forward" cards, to be used when performing an act of kindness. The idea is that each person, in turn, will then carry out an act of kindness and a chain reaction will ensue.
Speeches from several local dignitaries included Trustee Bruce Miller, Village of Port Jefferson; Jane Bonner, Brookhaven Town Council District 2; Kara Hahn, Suffolk County Legislator District 5; Sarah Anker, Suffolk County Legislator, District 6; and Valerie M. Cartright, Brookhaven Town Council District 1.
This was all capped off by the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included Richard Specht adding a copy of his book to the shelves of our library.
For early childhood education week Our Lady of Wisdom Regional School PreK, 1st and 2nd graders listened to some great stories from the Port Jefferson Librarian, Margaret Smith. Some of the stories that we read were:
1) "Fall is not easy" by: Marly Kelley
2) "Sneeze Big Bear, Sneeze" by: Maureen Wright
3) "Pumpkin Town" by: Katie Mckay
4) "Fall Ball" by: Peter McCarty
The children enjoyed listening to the stories in our new library and were given a fall leaf activity to complete back in the classrooms.
