St. Mary East Islip Student Advances to National History Bee Finals
William Lannigan, an 8th grade student at St. Mary School in East Islip, is moving onto the National History Bee National Finals in Chicago. William passed the Online Qualifying Exam allowing him to enter the Northeast Regional Finals, which took place on April 20, 2016, in Darien, Connecticut. He placed 10th after participating in several rounds consisting of orally read thirty (30) buzzer questions in each round.
The regional finals consist of thirty-nine regions. The divisions in each region are divided into 8th grade, 7th grade, and elementary. Once a student passes the Regional Finals, they will move onto the National Finals to compete for the National History Bee Champion title. This is a four (4) day event which allows students to also compete in various side events. These side events include competitions such as the Pop Culture Challenge, National Citizenship Bee, and Subject Exams. There are also social events which include the family.
