McGann-Mercy Students Participate in International Awareness Day
Posted on 09/25/2017

McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School in Riverhead created International Awareness Day for the first time this year in order for American students to gain insight into the challenges faced by international students.  The goal is to foster a more accepting environment in the hopes that students make an effort to bond with those from different countries and show their Mercy spirit. There are several activities to help understand differences in social cues, traditions, customs, and academics.  For example, students were given a test in another language and then graded.  The students were immediately frustrated and filled with anxiety, which is similar to how international students feel when taking exams in English, a language they have limited knowledge of. Another station focused on social cues, where they learned that those from other countries are discouraged from being too direct with their friends.  Instead, friends are expected to read between the lines.  The transition to America can be difficult since we are often more direct, which could be considered rude where they are from. Overall, the day was very well received by the students and faculty. Students now have more of an insight of the difficult challenges of international students.
