St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope Students Study Horseshoe Crabs
Posted on 12/13/2017

Students in all grade levels are observing baby horseshoe crabs that hatched from a recent spawn. The eggs come from the Molloy College CERCOM facility in the West Sayville Boat Basin. The eggs and hatchlings have to be observed under a microscope because they are the size of a pin head. The students observe the growth of the horseshoe crabs, feed them, and monitor water conditions in the salt water nursery. At the end of the school year, the juveniles are returned to the lab in West Sayville for study. This prehistoric species is considered threatened in North America.
