The Curriculum Leads Program aims to improve both the academic quality and rigor of instruction the DRVC elementary schools. Led by the DRVC Department of Education and Morning Star Initiative teams, the program centers around constructing and designing a cohesive, comprehensive, and innovative curriculum reflective of best practices across all DRVC elementary schools.
The program was originally initiated as a response to the challenge of providing students with a quality remote education amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Immediately after the announcement of school closures, DRVC elementary school principals got to work and nominated strong teachers from all subject areas and grade levels to serve as Curriculum Leads and help uncover the best ways to teach remotely. This created a community for teachers to share ideas and support each other during an unprecedented time. The MSI team, Curriculum Leads, and DRVC School Administrators have met weekly since March to discuss best practices and streamline improvement of academics across all Catholic schools.
Due to the program’s success during COVID-19, teachers, principals, and schools will continue the program and working to develop, uncover, and consolidate the best teaching practices. Teacher collaboration and sharing best practices will continue to play a vital role within the MSI mission as it works towards establishing an academic program for Catholic elementary schools that is highly rigorous, rooted in faith, and ensures students future success in high school and beyond.
“I think that this will really make the Diocese a more cohesive unit! This will allow so many teachers to collaborate and create strong lessons!”
-Teacher from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Regional School, Bellmore
“My colleagues enjoy the exchange of ideas and the collaboration that has come about with this initiative. They are pleased with the resources and materials they have seen.”
-Teacher from St. John Paul II School, Riverhead
“I think that this program has been extremely successful! Personally I have learned so much about the distance learning platform in such a short time period. In addition, I have learned how to use the technology that we have available to effectively teach such young students. The interaction between teachers in schools across the Diocese has been remarkable! I have collaborated and shared resources more in the past 3 months than I did within the past 14 years of being a teacher. Having this platform provided an outlet for many teachers ~including myself~ to express our concerns and triumphs as we navigated this path. Rather than working as separate schools, we worked as one united front of teachers within our Diocese cheering one another on and helping one another succeed.”
-Teacher from St. Edward Confessor School, Syosset
“Each teacher has something to offer. It makes them feel valuable. The feedback they get from each other, fosters growth. The collaboration between teachers has been excellent. I have noticed that the sharing of resources has been most beneficial to all the teachers.”
-Principal from Holy Name of Mary School, Valley Stream
“I believe this program has done a great deal for our teachers during this time and it should be continued going forward if possible.”
-Principal from St. Edward Confessor School, Syosset
