The Faith in the Public Square inititiative developed as a response to Bishop Barres' February 2019 letter regarding the NYS Reproductive Health Act. Through these inititiatives, the Department of Education and members of the Catholic school communitities show their support for all life.
Through this initiative, members of the Department of Education and school communities knitted, crocheted, and loomed 2,069 baby hats for babies born in the hospitals of Long Island's Catholic Health Services. This took place during Lent 2019.
From Memorial Day through Flag Day 2019, school communities collected items for children and families who will be in need during the summer months. Many of these children receive breakfast and lunch in their schools during the school year. The items collected were donated to the parishes connected to each school.
During the summer and fall of 2019, prayer shawls and lap blankets will be created from knitting, crocheting, and using fleece for patients and nursing home residents of Catholic Health Services.
From October through May, Dr. Walsh, Superintendent, meets with parent representatives from each of our schools. During these meetings, Dr. Walsh shares information from the Department of Education and all discuss the good things taking place in our schools. Parents are provided with ideas and resources to take back to their schools.
The Move As One initiative helps parents carry out our mission to "Enroll. Education. Evangelize." Through this program, parents will be provided with resources to support and strengthen their schools.
The Project Alpha program assists in supporting a postive, well-rounded, safe, nurturing environment for students that encompasses a growth mindset, social-emotional learning, positive teacher-student relationships, and an on-going resource for parents, teachers, administrators, and students to support the mental health of all individuals and promote academic excellence. Project Alpha is a team of licensed social workers and certified school counselors. The program is funded through a grant from the Mother Cabrini Foundation.
