The eighth grade STEAM students of St. Joseph School in Ronkonkoma worked on a four-week program that incorporated electric basics, computer light design, music, and copyright law.

Students worked in groups to find Christmas music in the public domain to set a custom designed light show.  Using the software Light-O-Rama Sequence Editor, students programmed the software to recognize the unique beat and tempo of their chosen song.  They then designed ten separate channels of lights to “dance” to their song in a combination of blinking, fading up and down, twinkling, and chasing.

After designing their light show, students put up their Christmas lights on school grounds and hooked up each string to a corresponding channel on the Light-O-Rama device, while simultaneously feeding the audio-out of the computer to a high powered amplifier

On December 7th, the students presented a fifteen-minute light show to the parish and school community.
